Ollie raises £3,500 with 110-mile cycle for granddad

At his age, many children are only just managing to wobble their way on two wheels to the end of the garden and back.

But six-year-old Ollie Jamieson had his sights set a little higher when it came to a sponsored cycle.

Ollie, from Shetland, wanted to do something special to remember his grandfather George Nisbet, who died two years ago.

The schoolboy from Sandwick has now completed a sponsored cycle totalling more than 100 miles to raise around £3,500 for Cancer Research UK.

Ollie said he was “very, very happy” to have completed the challenge in memory of his granddad, who was from Mid Yell, who died of cancer in April 2014 at the age of 57.

A gathering of well-wishers cheered a beaming Ollie over the finish line at Sandwick on Sunday afternoon.

He far exceeded a fundraising target of £2,000 – as of Monday the online total was £3,469.39.

Ollie’s five-year-old brother Jacob has joined him on many of the cycles to keep him company. During the time he has been fundraising, the boys were also buoyed with the arrival of a baby brother, Sinclair.

He said his favourite part of the challenges was “going on a massive cycle to Cunningsburgh”, and the worst part of the challenge was “having sore legs after big cycles”.

He was generally averaging around 6-7mph but achieved a best speed of 18mph on his new bike, a Frog 52 with eight gears which “makes going up hills easy”.

Ollie’s parents, Debbie and Steven Jamieson, were delighted with his efforts.

“We are very proud of Ollie,” Steven said. “He has been really dedicated to his challenge. He was always keen to keep going and get the miles in.

“He cycled up the cliffs of Cunningsburgh on one of his rides, which for a six year old was some achievement.

“We would like to thank everybody who has supported him over the past six months and to all the folk who have donated so generously.”
