One man has been found dead and another is still missing after concerns were first raised for their wellbeing yesterday.
As a result of co-ordinated searching, the remains of the man were recovered on the shoreline of Loch of Boardhouse, Birdsay.
The boat used by the fishermen was also found and recovered a short distance from the remains.
The second fisherman has not yet been traced and searches of the area surrounding the loch are continuing.
Local Area Inspector Alicen Winston said, “Police enquiries are at an early stage in what appears to be a tragic accident where one male has died and another remains missing.
“Agencies responding to the report of the missing men have been greatly assisted by members of the local community and I thank them for their assistance with our efforts to trace both men.”
A spokesman for Police Scotland added: “Enquiries are currently underway to make contact with the next of kin of both males therefore no further details in regard to their identity are to be released at this time.
“Any person with information they may have which could be relevant should contact Police at Kirkwall on 101.”
