A north-east couple have criticised NHS Grampian after learning they would have to travel more than 180 miles for treatment.
Angela Smart, from Fetterangus, near Mintlaw, suffers from lifelong arthritis and fibromyalgia, a chronic condition which causes long-term muscle pain.
The 62-year-old usually attends Woodend Hospital’s orthopaedic department in Aberdeen, but has now been waiting six months for treatment for her knees.
Earlier this month, she received a letter asking her to contact the health board, whereupon she was offered the opportunity to be treated at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank, just outside Glasgow.
But her husband Roger has claimed that, if patients refused this offer, they were put to the back of the waiting list.
Last night Mr Smart described the situation as a “mess”.
He said: “What we have been told is that there are a huge number of people on the waiting list.
“Our position is that we need something done, my wife is in a lot of pain.
“We would go to the Golden Jubilee, I know the health board will pay for travel and a meal.
“We’re retired and can travel, but I would imagine there are a lot of people who can’t.
“I imagine an awful lot of people can’t make the appointment in Glasgow, so they get shoved to the back of the line.
“It’s absolutely ludicrous because it must cost them a heck of a lot of money.”
Last night, NHS Grampian confirmed there was high demand for orthopaedic appointments, with about 250 referrals every week.
But health bosses have said waiting times had been reduced recently, following the opening of two new theatres and the appointment of six consultants.
A spokesman added that, due to the demand, patients were occasionally offered treatment in other health boards.
He said: “The decision on whether to accept treatment outwith Grampian is entirely the decision of the patient and we respect their right to choose.
“We would like to reassure people they are not penalised for choosing to be seen locally.
“Anyone with any concerns about any aspect of our service is encouraged to contact our Feedback service. That can be done over the phone, by email or by post.”
