An Aberdeen bypass lorry emptied rubble and boulders across a north-east road yesterday.
The sub-contractor for the AWPR project was travelling on the A90 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road, near Newburgh, when the incident took place at about 1.30pm.
The vehicle shed its load, which resulted in rubble and boulders being strewn across both carriageways and causing traffic chaos.
Police were called to the scene soon afterwards and closed the route for nearly two hours in both directions to allow the mess to be cleared.
Motorists were forced to take an alternative route through Newburgh until the road was reopened at about 3.10pm.
Last night, Transport Scotland confirmed the lorry had been a part of the ongoing bypass works in the region.
A Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “The sub-contractor involved in this incident was undertaking work on behalf of the project.
“The AWPR/B-T contractor’s operation and maintenance division worked with Police Scotland to implement a temporary diversion during the short time taken for the road to be cleaned and reopened.”
