An Aberdeenshire town centre was transformed into a racetrack yesterday as hundreds turned out to cheer on the competitors in the seventh annual Ellon Pedal Car Race.
The popular event, organised by the Rotary Club, pitted dozens of racers in their own home-made vehicles against each other for a whole day of family fun and to raise cash for charity.
The proceedings were kicked off by Aberdeen FC star Adam Rooney, who delighted Pittodrie fans at the starting line.
A wide variety of community groups from Ellon and the surrounding area took part in the festivities, including teams from the Ythanview Hotel, the rugby club, the Ellon scouts and the local church.
Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin joined Mr Rooney as one of the event’s special guests.
She said: “It was on the whole day, we had cycle races and fun runs, and by the time the pedal car race started there must have been nearly 1,000 folk lining the streets.
“It was absolutely magic fun – the organisers were a bit worried in the morning because it was raining, but as things kicked off, it got really sunny, and I am just so glad it was such a success.
“The pedal car race is quickly becoming one of the best days of the year for Ellon, it’s been going on for a few years now and I think it’s only going to get bigger and better in the years to come.
“It’s an absolutely smashing day out, and a great way for the community to come together and have fun.”
