An elderly woman has died in hospital after being struck by a car in Ellon at the weekend.
Eighty-nine-year-old Mary Donald was hit by a blue Peugeot 208 on Saturday morning as she tried to cross the bridge on the town’s South Road.
Emergency services were sent to the scene and took the pensioner to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) where she was being treated.
However last night police confirmed that Ms Donald had died of her injuries.
The 65-year-old female driver of the car was not injured in the collision.
Friends yesterday paid tribute to Ms Donald, who said she would be sorely missed by many.
Ms Donald’s close friend and neighbour of 18 years said: “This is devastating news and I am thinking of her family at this time, I cannot imagine how they must be feeling.
“Mary was a very gently and loving woman; we would always try and help her out whenever she needed something.
“She was really the perfect neighbour, she loved gardening and we’d often swap plants to look after.
“The news is incredibly shocking and she is going to be sorely missed; it was a terrible accident and I still haven’t come to terms with what has happened.
“We have known her for over 18 years and now knowing she won’t be being next door is going to be very difficult to accept, she was a wonderful woman and the news is heart-breaking.”
The family were too upset to comment last night.
Ellon and District councillor Gillian Owen said: “My thoughts are with her family at this particularly sad time, it is an incredibly sad accident.”
Police officers are still appealing for information following the tragedy.
Sergeant Rob Warnock, from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Road Policing Unit, said: “First and foremost our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mary who was well known in the Ellon area.
“Inquiries are ongoing and I would urge anyone with information who hasn’t yet come forward to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
