North-east commuters are facing 12 miles of misery on one of the north’s busiest road with speed cuts set to slash the limit to just 40mph.
The move comes just months after Transport Scotland revealed speeds on the A90 would be dropped on to 50mph to help protect workers.
The restriction will be in place between the Ellon bypass and Murcar roundabouts while work is carried out on the Aberdeen bypass and Balmedie-Tipperty dualling scheme.
It will cover both the existing dual carriageway sections of the route – which runs from Fraserburgh to Peterhead an on to the city.
Now, Transport Scotland has revealed it will lower the limit further as workers get closer to the busy dual carriageway.
Councillor Allan Hendry, who regularly attends transportation meetings relating to the AWPR, has backed the move, saying workers lives are being put at risk.
He told the Evening Express: “They will be working at the edge of the road a lot more.
“Once they complete the off-road stuff, they will come closer and closer to the dual carriageway.
“As far as I’m concerned, safety is paramount.
“There is no doubt 40mph is going to be frustrating for people but when it comes to the safety of workers I would have to support it.
“This will 100% be controversial.”
