£37million school plans to be discussed

St Peters
St Peters

Multimillion pound plans for two new Aberdeen primary schools will be discussed by councillors next week.

School places have been stretched in recent years in the Torry, Tillydrone and Old Aberdeen areas of the city.

But the £37million plans, if approved, would spell the end for St Peter’s Roman Catholic School.

Next Thursday, members of the council’s education committee will meet to discuss proposals to build new primaries in the areas.

The area known as St Machar Park has been selected as the preferred option for a new school, to replace the aging St Peter’s and another non-denominational facility totalling £17million.

Meanwhile to the south of the city, councillors will be asked to approve the start of consultation on a new £20million school on the site of Torry Academy, which is to close to make way for the new joint South of the City academy combining Torry and Kincorth.

Other locations had been put forward including the former Victoria Road school and the St Fittick depot, but officers have recommended the former academy site.

A report to committee reads: “St Peter’s School is currently operating at approximately 150% capacity, and is forecasting further incremental increases over the next seven years. The current condition of the St Peter’s school building is rated as “C” (poor).

“A new two-stream school (434 places plus nursery) is therefore proposed to replace the existing St Peter’s School building.

A separate report reads: “Each of the sites has been assessed against a range of set criteria, the Torry Academy site was identified as the most favourable for development.”

Education convener Angela Taylor said: “We are committed to delivering the best possible education for the children of Torry and Tillydrone.

“However we would not need to spend all this money if it were not for the previous administration’s shambolic policy of closing schools.

“The council is now having to pay millions for their error.”

Last night opposition SNP education spokesman Alex Nicoll said: “The devil will be in the detail with these proposals.

“I think that St Peters certainly needs to be replaced but I think we need to know how essentially two schools on the same site will work in practice.”
