An Aberdeenshire woman, who recovered from cancer, has successfully raised over £21,000 for charity after arranging a community event to thank those who helped her overcome her illness.
Alison Brown from Kemnay held the Purple Walk on Sunday: it attracted nearly 400 participants and raised more than £20,000 for Clan Cancer Support.
Mrs Brown was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and visited the Clan centre regularly throughout her period of treatment.
Speaking about the success of Sunday’s event, she said she had been “overwhelmed” by the generosity and kind words of the community.
The 35-year-old, who has two children, said: “It was the most gorgeous day and we had 390 people take part in the walk which was double the amount I ever expected.
“It was a fantastic event and the community spirit on the day was unbelievable. People were walking, cheering or hosting the event, and everybody was really behind it.
“Residents were stood outside their homes cheering people on, something which I had never expected to happen, the support was overwhelming and beyond anything I had ever anticipated.”
“After its success, I have received nothing but positive feedback and now I am keen to make it an annual event for Clan.”
Susan Crighton, the charity’s fundraising manager, added: “We have been blown away by the amount raised at the Purple Walk, particularly as this is the first year it has been held.
“This was a true community effort, with many local businesses getting involved to help Alison.
“Everyone at Clan would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks to her for taking the time to organise such a fantastic event. The enthusiasm and commitment she has shown is wonderful.”
