A north-east youth football team is poised to take part in a charity walk in aid of a teammate’s brother.
Westdyke Community Club, based in Westhill, will participate in the JDRF One Walk, along with members of their families, at Drum Castle on September 25.
The group decided to enter the trek to offer support to Callum Cowie, whose older brother, Adam Cowie, is suffering from type-one diabetes.
Adam, eight, was first diagnosed with the disease in 2013. And the football-mad youngster has to go through eight checks every day.
The coach of the 2009 team, Mark Robson said: “When you understand what it means to live with type 1 diabetes, we knew we wanted to help.
“Being a communitybased club, we’re as much about helping kids develop into good adults as good footballers.
“I am delighted and encouraged that so many of the team are either taking part or supporting with sponsorship.”
Adam’s father, Davie, added: “He doesn’t see himself as any different to other boys, but the diabetes has taken a bit of his childhood away. Finding a cure would bring back some normality for our little boy.
“The JDRF One Walk is an event that is hugely important to Adam as it shows they are not alone and there are not only other children and adults going through the same challenges as them, but there are also many people who care enough to raise money to help find a cure to their condition”
Type 1 diabetes affects 29,00 adults and children in Scotland, with the disease forcing a five-year-old child to have as many as 19,000 injections by the time they reach 18.
The walk will take place at 9.30am.
