A new head teacher has been drafted into a north-east school following three years of temporary leadership.
Banff Academy was rocked by the surprise resignation of former rector David Dunn in 2013, when he sent a letter to parents informing them of his decision to retire – just two days before leaving.
Aberdeenshire Council education officer Andrew Ritchie stepped up to the role on a temporary basis, but has now made way for Mintlaw Academy’s Alan Horberry, who starts today.
The recruitment process for a replacement head teacher at Mintlaw is already under way.
Mr Horberry, who started out teaching history and modern studies, said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mintlaw Academy and have been delighted to see improvements in the school in terms of attainment and the positive destinations our young people are going on to.
“I feel that during my time pupils’ aspirations and the school’s ethos have developed and they have a more positive outlook towards their future.
“Banff Academy has lots of potential to develop and I’m looking forward to meeting my new team, staff and pupils on Monday.”
Councillor Alison Evison, chairwoman of the council’s education committee, added: “Alan joins Banff Academy with over 18 years as a leader within Aberdeenshire secondary schools and most recently four years of success as head teacher at in Mintlaw.
“The senior leadership team at Mintlaw Academy will be supported by the council to ensure the smooth running of the school while we recruit for another head teacher to fill Alan’s shoes.
“I’m sure Mintlaw pupils and staff will be sad to see him leave but Banff Academy will benefit from his wealth of experience and I wish him all the best in his new role.”
Mr Ritchie left Banff Academy at the start of the summer break to work on a council scheme to develop young workforces.
