Tar which covered historic Aberdeen cobbles in a botched job was removed yesterday.
The stones on the city’s Windmill Brae, which are believed to be hundreds of years old, were covered with bitmac at the start of the month.
It has now been removed by council road workers using an infra-red heater which effectively and then scraping it off.
Finance convener Willie Young said the mix-up had been caused by a council officer.
He said: “Obviously an error occurred but we made a commitment that we would solve the problem and we have.
“The road is now back to the way it was and we are investigating as to what exactly happened.”
SNP group leader Stephen Flynn said: “It’s good to see that this road has been fixed but our attention now turns to how the situation arose and how much it cost.”
