A north-east community recycling scheme has issued an “urgent” appeal for help to find new premises in the area.
The 2ReUse Recycling initiative has been run by Peterhead Projects from a former agricultural building at Dales Park for many years.
But with the premises now earmarked for demolition to clear space for a new housing development, 2ReUse will be moving out.
Peterhead Projects development boss, Ken Duncan, said: “We are indebted to Aberdeenshire Council for its support of our initiative by allowing us to use the store in recent years but the race is now very much on to source alternative accommodation.
“Thanks to the hugely-generous nature of local residents, 2ReUse receives hundreds of household items weekly to further its recycling cause.
“But with limited space within our retail outlets we are unable to offer all items for sale so a suitable storage facility is vital if we are to continue offering this wonderful service.”
The aim of the project is to divert unwanted items away from landfill. Instead everything from furniture, bikes, electrical appliances, clothing and linen is refurbished and repackaged for sale.
Mr Duncan said that the team needs premises with around 5,000sqft of “secure space”, adding: “But with limited funds we are ideally hoping a local business may be able to offer us accommodation free of charge – at least for a period.”
2ReUse recently launched Be Inspired at its Skelton Street shop in Buchanhaven where a range of “shabby chic furniture” is on offer alongside vintage collectibles and a range of whole foods.
Earlier this month 2ReUse benefited from a £23,000 donations from the Morrisons Foundation which will fund the purchase of a new van.
2ReUse is the holder of two Green Apple Awards for innovative work in the community and the environment.
The scheme has supported more than 180 volunteers by offering training in the workplace and operates shops at Berryden Road, Marischal Street and Skelton Street.
