Thousands of north-east residents visited the Granite City without their vehicles yesterday to take part in Town Without My Car Day.
More than 8,000 people enjoyed the Belmont Street waterslide, a climbing tower, bike try-outs and other stalls at the free event designed to highlight alternatives to driving into the city centre like walking, cycling, or taking the bus.
A number of streets were closed off especially for the day, which was held as part of European Mobility Week.
Aberdeen City Council’s transport spokesman Councillor Ross Grant said: “We want to encourage more people to look at alternative methods of transport than their car, so we hope today’s event helped to highlight how easy, fun and money-saving walking, cycling, using buses or the Co Wheels car club can be.
“We want to raise awareness about what the city council is doing to encourage usage of these alternatives modes of transport all year round, not just once a year during In Town Without My Car Day.
“We’d love to know what people think about using these alternative forms of transport.”
Aberdeen City Council is currently asking city residents for their opinion on its Active Travel Action Plan, which outlines what actions the local authority wants to take to ensure walking and cycling are convenient, safe and healthy choices of travel for everyday journeys.
To have your voice heard, visit www.aberdeencity.gov.uk and search “Active Travel Action Plan” to take part in the public consultation.
The closing date of the consultation is November 10.
