A group of Peterhead youngsters will take on a unique charity walk in aid of a local women’s addiction recovery home.
The Toddle for Benaiah has been organised by a trio of mothers to raise funds for Teen Challenge which offers mums a place stay with their kids while they complete a recovery programme.
Its base, near Mintlaw, is currently rented, but the toddle will feed cash into a wider campaign which aims to raise more
than £500,000 to take on the property permanently.
The purchase of Benaiah would mean the centre could continue to provide females with residential support on a permanent basis and, ultimately, help many more women break free from addiction.
Louise More, an organiser of the walk, got involved after visiting the centre earlier this year.
“I think people can have very bad views and opinions on addicts, but it hit home to me that the women in there are just like me – they have lives and they have feelings,” she added.
“I had the chance to have a cup of tea with them and they were all lovely. They all have so much potential and I just wanted to tell them that they are all doing a great job.
“When we left, for days all I could think about were the ladies in there and what I could do to help, so I asked my friends Sasha Buchan and Emma Lawson if they could help me organise an event to raise money for Buy Benaiah.”
The event takes place on Saturday, October 8, and will follow a route from Peterhead’s Lido along the prom and South Road.
