The hard work of north-east volunteers has been recognised at an awards ceremony.
The winners of the Grampian Volunteer Transport Awards, which is in its third year, were honoured yesterday.
John Clegg was voted volunteer driver of the year for 21 years with the Fraserburgh Visually Impaired Support Group.
In his nomination he was described as “that one in a million, special person” for the organisation, which offers social and emotional support to people with serious sight loss.
Volunteer escort of the year was awarded to Janice Laing, who has been working as a passenger assistant twice a week for more than four years with Banffshire Partnership Limited.
In her nomination she was described as “extremely friendly and helpful” and someone who “goes the extra mile”.
Anita Milne accepted the community contribution of the year award on behalf of the Moray Transport Forum.
She was described as working “tirelessly all year long promoting rural transport as (an) issue”.
She was also said to be “instrumental” in getting a grant of £5,000 to set up a Saturday bus service to three rural villages in the area.
NHS Grampian and Nestrans health and transport action plan (HTAP) programme manager, Andrew Stewart, said: “Many vulnerable people rely on volunteer transport services to help them access health and social care.
“The recent awards have highlighted the significant efforts of those already providing voluntary community transport.
“All the HTAP partners supporting the awards are pleased to create a platform for celebrating this important sector.”
Each winner was awarded a £200 high street voucher donated by sponsors First Aberdeen and Stagecoach North East.
