An organisation, dedicated to transforming the ailing fortunes of Peterhead, has claimed the port is poised to enter a new era of prosperity.
Rediscover Peterhead has appointed local man Iain Sutherland as its project coordinator, with a view to leading its struggling shops out of the economic downturn.
And last night, Mr Sutherland, who runs a gift shop on Marischal Street, argued that local firms could boost regeneration efforts, already underway throughout Aberdeenshire, by forming a business improving district (BID).
The 55-year-old said: “This is Peterhead’s opportunity to get involved in business improvement within the town centre.
“I am hoping, over the next 12 months, to speak to businesses here and, based on their needs and concerns, draw up a business plan. If that is acceptable, then we will form a company to implement the ideas.
“Every business will have its own unique concerns, but I imagine one of the main things will be footfall in the town centre. It’s something that concerns most businesses here – and we’ll need to look at the opportunities available to improve that.”
Previous regeneration efforts in Peterhead have included promoting ‘shop local’ campaigns and providing funding to improve shop frontages.
Mr Sutherland added: “We are hoping for really good things for the town centre in the future.
“This is a time of change for us here and this could be a great way for businesses to get an opportunity to shape their town centre.
“Peterhead will not only be the biggest town in Aberdeenshire, but the biggest and the best.”
Rediscover Peterhead was formed earlier this year in an effort to make a “real difference” to the town. The project will involve local firms voluntarily contributing money to develop the environment.
The hope is that the group can help entrepreneurs create a coherent vision for the town and collaborate to make Peterhead more attractive for both local shoppers and visitors.
