Vandals cut up popular showground with their motors

Vandals have caused fresh damage in a north-east port by ruining a popular showground.

Car tracks made a bad impression at Fraserburgh’s South Links yesterday morning, where the town’s gala and visiting circuses regularly set up their stalls.

The damage, caused by a vehicle driving onto the grass and then turning forcibly and repeatedly, is the latest in a series of incidents across the port since the summer.

Earlier this week, seven vehicles at a local car showroom were left needing repairs after they all had their paintwork damaged.

Last month, children as young as eight were seen breaking windows at a former family centre in Bervie Road.

And, in August, groups of vandals were blamed for causing significant damage to the dunes of Fraserburgh Beach and the Waters of Philorth nature reserve.

Lifebuoys were removed from their holders, bins were destroyed, and even a gate blocking vehicles from accessing the beach was ripped from its hinges and dragged away.

Fraserburgh Rugby Club also had its posts damaged on a night of attacks across the town.

Mary Melville, the vice-chairwoman of the town’s safety group, slated the incidents and expressed mystification at the continuing blight.

She said: “You have to wonder if these people have a vendetta against these places, or if it’s just opportunistic. I really don’t know.

“Vandalism in Fraserburgh seems to come in waves, and how can we stop it? It’s really very, very difficult.

“Things could get out of control and I don’t know enough about the youth of today to know their backgrounds and why it is happening.

“But it’s not good for the town.”

Police are currently appealing for witnesses about the attack at Murray Motors, which happened on October 14.

Constable Justine Griffiths said: “The garage is on the main road leading into Fraserburgh, so it is possible a passing motorist may have seen something.”
