The family of an Aberdeen boxer allegedly murdered in his own flat has said they are devastated his life has “ended so soon”.
Robert Reid died last week, and was discovered by police in a property in the Mastrick area.
Police sealed off several streets and launched a murder inquiry, carrying out door-to-door inquiries and searching gardens, bins and bushes.
Yesterday, the 26-year-old amateur boxer’s heartbroken family paid tribute.
In a statement, they said: “Robert was a much loved husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin to many.
“We are devastated that his children will have to grow up without their father and that his life has ended so soon.
“He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him and we would ask that we are left in private to grieve at this extremely difficult time.”
Last week, Aberdeen Amateur Boxing Club described Mr Reid as an “outstanding junior boxer”.
They said: “Robert was an outstanding junior boxer who, along with his brother Stewart, picked up junior and youth titles in their very successful careers.
“Our thoughts are with Robert’s family, his mum and dad and his brother Stewart at this time. Rest in peace, Robert.”
Emergency services were called to Arnage Place at about 5am on Wednesday following concerns for a member of the public, and found Mr Reid inside.
The call came just hours after neighbours reported hearing a disturbance outside.
Witnesses said the victim – who had a young son with fiancee Jackie Hanratty – was seen at about 1.45am outside the flat, after a loud argument.
Police assured the community it was an “isolated” incident, and it later emerged they were keeping their suspect under police guard at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Darren Barnes, also known as Riley, was charged with Mr Reid’s murder on Thursday and appeared at the city’s sheriff court the next day.
The 28-year-old made no plea or declaration during the brief private hearing. His case was continued, but a date for his next appearance has not yet been set. He was remanded in custody.
