A Remembrance Sunday service has been cancelled at a Stonehaven church after a large section of the building’s roof collapsed.
The historically A-listed Episcopal Church of St James the Great, on Arbuthnott Street, was due to hold the event this weekend, but organisers have been forced to move the ceremony to the nearby kirk instead.
David Fleming, buildings convener at the church, said: “A 4ft by 2ft section of the ceiling has fallen in, which means we have been advised the church will be closed to the public until repairs are complete – and they’re going to be quite extensive.
“And as a consequence the Remembrance Day service this coming Sunday will now be held in the South Church on Cameron Street.
“It happened overnight.
“Very luckily there was nobody in the building at the time, but had there been they could have been injured or worse – it’s quite a thick piece of plaster, and weighs quite a lot.
“The repairs will cost us more than £20,000.
“Church services will be held in the church hall for the duration.
“We’re just happy that nobody was in the building at the time.”
