Police are urging moped and motorcycle owners in Aberdeen to take extra security precautions following a spate of thefts in the city.
Six bikes have been reported as stolen since the beginning of the month.
In the majority of cases some security measures were in place, however not enough to ensure the thieves were able to get away with the vehicles with relative ease.
Local Area Commander Chief Inspector Graeme Mackie said: “If you have access to a garage, shed or outbuilding please consider storing your vehicle in it when you’re not there, day or night.
“All it should take is a couple of minutes and could save you a lot of time, cost and effort in the long run if the worst was to happen.
“Invest in good quality solid chains and padlocks and lock the bike to an immovable object like a securing rail or a ground anchor. Motorbikes and mopeds can easily be lifted and carried away even when locked which makes them even more attractive to thieves.
“Also consider using audible alarms and immobilisers because investing in both mechanical and electronic security devices will reduce your chances of becoming a victim of theft. If your bike needs to be outside try leaving it in a well-lit area which is covered by CCTV.
“It’s also my fear that thieves could be stealing the bikes for nothing more than a thrill and use them for joyriding. I cannot stress enough the danger this poses to the public, so please don’t allow your vehicle to become their weapon.
“Anyone with information or concerns about this type of crime in their area can contact Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous. I would also urge anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour relating to mopeds or motorcycles to get in touch.”
