Plans to open Scotland’s first virtual gym in Aberdeen have been unveiled.
The virtual activity zone is part of the refurbishment work taking place at the Jesmond Sports Centre in Bridge of Don.
Sport Aberdeen hope to install interactive screens, virtual reality bikes, wireless technologies and 3D camera sensors to encourage people to take part in sport and physical activity.
Keith Gerrard, Sport Aberdeen’s director of operations and asset development, said: “Far from being a futuristic dream, virtual technologies are very much a part of our everyday lives.
“Integrating gaming technologies into a gym environment opens up another world of possibilities to encourage more people to get active.”
The works include an expanded 70-station gym, a spin studio, a new aerobics studio and other improvements to the building.
The plans to modernise the venue come after a new initiative to make Aberdeen the most active city in Scotland by 2020 was launched in August.
Mr Gerrard said that although sports participation is increasing among adults and children in Aberdeen, there is still more work to be done.
He added: “The innovative virtual gym offers a more engaging experience, particularly to those who might be discouraged from attending a traditional gym.”
It is hoped the virtual area will be open in January.
