New mountain festival carved out for Braemar

A brand new skiing and mountain sports festival has been carved out for the Cairngorms National Park.

The Braemar Mountain Festival is the brainchild of mountain climber and professional mountain guide, Sue Harper, and will offer visitors a chance to try out some other winter sports.

The varied programme offers something for everyone including an introduction to cross-country skiing; telemarking and some off piste ski-touring.

The weekend will also host guest speakers and après-ski music and food events.

The three day event will be rounded off with a film night showing the best of the Kendall Mountain Film Festival.

Sue said: “We want to stage a festival which gives people the chance to try out some of the activities that they might see in our amazing films or hear about from our line-up of great speakers, as well as offering some legendary Scottish hospitality including a ceilidh, live music and local whisky.

“When most people think of the Cairngorms, they tend to think of Aviemore, so we wanted to put Braemar on the map and show everyone how beautiful it is.

“Braemar is one of the snowiest and coldest places in the UK and is set in an amazing mountainscape, so it’s an ideal location for a winter based mountain festival.”

The festival will be centred at Braemar, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, just ten minutes drive from Glenshee Ski Centre, where many of the activity based sessions will be held.

Sue Harper and a team of volunteers are organising the event which will be held in March 2017.
