New research suggests that the majority of people in the Banff and Buchan area voted to leave the European Union in June’s referendum.
Chris Hanretty, a politics lecturer at East Anglia University, has calculated the Leave vote share in every Westminster constituency in the UK.
Mr Hanretty’s research suggested that 54% of voters in Banff and Buchan chose to vote for Brexit when the region is considered as a UK Parliament constituency.
The area contains the fishing towns of Peterhead and Fraserburgh.
The results of the EU referendum were announced by local council areas in Scotland, and in the Aberdeenshire council region – which incorporates the UK parliamentary constituency of Banff and Buchan – the result was in favour of remaining in the EU.
Mr Hanretty said he calculated his figures using census data, and believes they are accurate to within 1%.
He said: “If there is a constituency with a 51% leave vote, I would say there is still an element of doubt but in the case of Banff and Buchan it’s 54%.
“It makes sense to me, especially as it’s the home of the fishing industry and it’s encouraging because there is nothing in my model which says anything about fishing but it still shows a leave vote based on all the other factors.”
As a country, Scotland cast 1,661,191 votes in favour of remaining in the EU, and 1,018,322 to leave.
