An Aberdeenshire town is rallying around a local woman’s bid to travel to the US for potentially life-saving cancer treatment.

A Hollywood Glam-themed dinner and dance has been organised to raise cash for Abigail Cox, from Inverurie, who has been battling rare bone condition Ewing’s sarcoma since February 2014.

The 21-year-old has been given the go-ahead to travel to a specialist centre in Houston, in the US, which doctors said would offer her the best chance of recovery.

Inverurie’s Elan Hair Design and Thainstone Events are behind the dinner and dance, which will take place at the Thainstone Exchange on Friday, December 2, from 7.30pm until late.

Miss Cox’s popular brother, talented 19-year-old rugby player Edward, died tragically earlier in the month.

Following his death, he was described by family as a “fun, loving, caring, energetic, cheeky, bright, and happy young lad that had a heart as big as anyone”.

Only hours before, their uncle, Ian Barclay, died from injuries he suffered in a farming accident at Meikle Wartle.

Following the tragedies, relatives relaunched a fundraising campaign to try to pay Abigail’s medical bills in the US. To date it has raised more than £67,000.

Lanice Milton, of Elan Hair Design, said: “It’s good to see the community and many of its businesses pulling together to support Abigail and her family in what has been a terribly tragic time for them.

“We’re looking forward to the dinner dance where we hope to raise as much funds as possible to go towards Abigail’s treatment.”

The event will include live music, an auction and raffles with prizes donated from businesses in Inverurie and further afield.

These include a photography package from Barclay Studios, vouchers from Inverurie’s Andersons, The Fountain and Altro, along with a meal voucher from Chapter One Restaurant and a JG Ross hamper.

Individual tickets and tables of eight can be bought from Elan Hair Design or at Strachans, both on Inverurie’s West High Street.
