North-east councillors will discuss next week whether to award money to a community group to have a war memorial repaired.
Buchan area committee meets on Tuesday to reach a decision on whether almost £1,000 should be given to volunteers who want to relocate and repair a memorial to Cruden Bay’s war dead.
The project, which will cost the local community council £1,185 to bring to fruition, needs £948 from Aberdeenshire Council to get off the ground.
Ritchie Johnson, the council’s director of business services, is asking local councillors to consider the scheme’s worth.
He said: “Supporting the work of community councils helps to sustain communities within Buchan.”
Cruden community council has submitted the application on behalf of Hatton Public Hall management committee, who were approached by representatives of Cruden Parish Church to relocate the memorial in a prominent position at the front of the building.
“The Hall Committee agreed to this request and also accepted responsibility for organising the memorial repairs and refixing it.
“Once the memorial has been relocated, there will be no further ongoing, annual or long-running costs.”
It is hoped that moving the memorial will make it easier to access and raise its profile across the community.
Mr Johnston added the funding “will be of benefit to the area in allowing community sponsored works to proceed”.
He said: “In this particular case, the main aims are to support and encourage active lifestyles, volunteering and improvement of the environment.”
Locals from the village make the pilgrimage to the memorial, at Cruden Parish Church, every year to observe Remembrance Sunday.
In previous years, these commemorations have been attended by forces survivors and local MSPs.
Last night, nobody from the Cruden Bay community council was available to comment on the project.
If approved, the money for the scheme would come from a pot of £7,612 which was set in place earlier this year for community initiatives across Buchan.
