Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson said the incident was “damaging” for locals, adding the force would be “concentrating” its efforts around Alford.
He added he was bearing in mind individuals who are “coming out from the city and committing crimes in the country”, adding many criminals might view parts of Aberdeenshire as an “easy target”.
DI Stevenson also called for any Alford residents who have CCTV cameras, or may have seen vehicles or people outside the stores in the early hours, to come forward and speak to police.
He said: “Any crime that happens in any area makes you a little uneasy. We are really needing someone to come forward and say I saw a vehicle that didn’t look right or clocked some people around about the Co-op.”
Anyone with information is being urged to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous.
