An annual fundraising swim across a north-east harbour will be a family affair this year after the daughter of Fraserburgh Lifeboat’s coxswain signed up to take part.
The crew have been hosting Boxing Day swims at Fraserburgh Harbour since 2007 in an effort to raise money to ensure they can continue to save lives at sea.
And this year, Victor Sutherland will be especially proud of the swimmers because his 13-year-old daughter is among their number.
Eilidh missed out on taking part last year because of the event’s minimum age requirement, but is ready to jump in to help out her dad this Christmas.
Last night, Mr Sutherland said he could not be happier that his daughter is taking an interest in fundraising.
He added: “She has been wanting to do the swim for the past few years, but she’s always been too young.
“She only missed out on it last year by 21 days, because of her age, but I didn’t want to be seen to be bending the rules to let her take part.
“Eilidh is really looking forward to it and has been training to get ready – including going to the swimming pool a few nights a week to get ready for the swim.
“But I imagine the water in the harbour will be a fair bit colder.
“I am really very chuffed for her.”
Inspired by his girl’s own efforts, Mr Sutherland will also take part in the swim. Fundraisers are sponsored by family members and the public to complete the event.
Donations can be handed in to the Fraserburgh Lifeboat station at the harbour, where hardy swimmers can also sign up for the initiative.
