An Aberdeen school was evacuated today after a fire broke out on the roof of a swimming pool.
Staff and pupils from Hazelhead Academy were evacuated as a precaution after flames were spotted on the roof of Hazlehead Swimming Pool.
Two fire crews were called to the scene at around 11.30am and ten firefighters fought to extinguish the flames.
The fire was brought under control by 12pm and a spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed damage to the building appeared to be minimal.
The fire is reported to have started on the roof of the swimming pool building, close to an area where contractors were working to board up skylights, as part of the work to secure the building following its closure.
Aberdeen West End councillor Martin Greig said he is seeking answers for how the fire broke out and warned that the incident could have been much worse if not for the “speedy action” of the fire service.
He said: “This fire has caused an unwelcome disruptuon to the school day. The school community need to know that the buildings are safe and secure.
“I have asked for an explanation of the cause the fire and reassurances that safety procedures will be put In place to prevent and reduce this kind of problem happening.
“I am grateful to the fire service for their speedy action. The incident could have ended much worse. Just in these last few days we had an abandoned car set on fire near the school. These incidents are unacceptable in the vicinity of a school.”
