The team in charge of a healthy food premises in the north east will set up a kitchen on the streets of Aberdeen this week to “spread the love” and help feed the city’s homeless people.
Staff from Peterhead’s Lettuce Eat Healthy cafe proved that the spirit of Christmas was alive and well in Aberdeenshire last year when they fed more than 70 people in the city centre over the festive period.
Now, they have announced they will once again reach out to the homeless, needy and elderly when they establish a “pop-up kitchen” on Thursday.
Manager Lorraine Duthie said: “We were totally overwhelmed by last year’s response and the generosity of everyone. Please can you consider giving again this year to the homeless, vulnerable and elderly.
“We are planning to set up a pop-up kitchen on Thursday, December 22 in Aberdeen to feed the homeless and needy.
“We also plan to reach out to the elderly and lonely people of Peterhead and the surrounding area as we know Christmas is not a happy time for everyone.”
The cafe staff are now collecting warm clothing, toiletries and sleeping bags to hand out as well as basic food items.
Lettuce Eat Healthy has teamed up with the Aberdeen branch of Social Bite – a sandwich shop which employs homeless people – as well as other care organisations for the initiative.
Last year, Mrs Duthie and her team were able to feed 75 people in one night. She said she was inspired by a homeless man in his 70s whom she found sitting outside a fast food restaurant on Union Street.
Three drop-off points have been set up in Peterhead where items can be donated ahead of Thursday’s trip to Aberdeen.
They are at The Little Shoe Bootique in Queen Street, the Co-operative store on Kinmundy Road and also at Lettuce Eat Healthy on Queen Street.
