Ferries have also been affected by Storm Barbara.
NorthLink Ferries said today that present weather forecasts are “indicating the high possibility of disruption to its services over the coming week”.
The operator wrote on their website: “Storm Barbara is due to arrive on Friday and Saturday  and with it we anticipate severe disruption and cancellations to our scheduled services.
Customers should review their current booking arrangements in-line with the information provided. We would strongly recommend that any passenger booked for travel on 23rd or 24th December consider alternative travel arrangements.
“The NorthLink Ferries operational team will continue to review the updated weather information as it becomes available and inform our customers accordingly to enable them to consider their options for travel.”
On Thursday, NorthLink are expected the M.V. Hamnavoe service to operate to the scheduled timetable. All sailings may be subject to minor weather related delays of up to 30 minutes.

Pentland Firth Arrivals and Departures
M.V. Hamnavoe
- The 06:30 sailing from Stromness to Scrabster will operate as scheduled with minor delays.
- The 08:45 sailing from Scrabster to Stromness will now depart at 10am with minor delays.
- The 16:45 and 19:00 sailings are now cancelled.
The operator has urged passengers to note that the above sailing being the last before Christmas.
Kirkwall (Hatston Pier) Arrivals and Departures
- Due to severe weather forecast the sailing scheduled for departure at 11:45pm from Kirkwall to Aberdeen is currently under review with a high possibility of cancellation.
- If you currently have a booking for this sailing we strongly advise that you consider alternative travel arrangements.
Lerwick Arrivals and Departures
- Due to severe weather forecast the sailing scheduled for departure at 5:30pm from Lerwick to Aberdeen via Kirkwall is currently under review with a high possibility of cancellation.
