A Stonehaven pensioner is proud to have been awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to the local community.
Karen Smith, who works for the local RNLI fundraising branch, said she was “overwhelmed” by the gesture which acknowledges her contribution to charity work in the country.
Last night the modest 72-year-old said: “I don’t think I deserve all this and I don’t really want to make a fuss.
“I feel very proud, not just for myself, but all the people who are supported by the lifeboats.”
A lifelong RNLI fundraiser Mrs Smith has held a variety of voluntary roles including president, vice chairman, secretary, committee member and box secretary over the last 34 years.
In addition her efforts enabled the small branch to receive increase donations from £5,000 a year to £17,000 a year.
The welly walk held annually in May was introduced by Mrs Smith and she also volunteers at her local Red Cross shop every week.
Mrs Smith was also the key instigator in securing a donation of £25,000 for the RNLI from a local company and organised numerous events to increase funds and awareness.
