A north-east community group is striving to win £5,000 of supermarket funding to boost their campaign to improve a local cemetery.
The Friends of Turriff Cemetery organisation was established in November last year to help clean up the burial ground and local environment.
And now, they have been chosen as part of Tesco’s ongoing community grant scheme.
Shoppers at stores in the area have the opportunity to put a token into the Friends of Turriff Cemetery box to show their support. Up to £5,000 of funding is available for the most popular project.
A spokesman for the group said: “We’re delighted to have been selected as one of the local community projects for the Tesco Bags Of Help grants.
“We could get up to £5,000 to help us tidy and improve the cemetery with Aberdeenshire Council.
“If you shop in Tesco, make sure you ask for a blue token and post it in the box for the Friends of Turriff Cemetery.”
When the group launched in November, the local authority hailed their initiative as a good example of partnership working between communities and councils.
It is hoped that, while the council continues to maintain the cemetery grounds, local people will enhance this operation by improving the site for visitors.
Plans for the future include using the cemetery as an educational tool for local schools.
Other projects vying for supermarket funding in the area include a skate park in Keith and Fraserburgh’s Secret Garden teaching area.
