A police officer had to be cut free from handcuffs after they “malfunctioned” during a training session in Aberdeen.

Firefighters were called to Mounthooly Way on Saturday after the officer got trapped in the restraints during a training session.

Bolt cutters were eventually used to free the officer.

An image believed to be of the incident appeared on the UK Cop Humour Facebook page with the caption: “Big shout out to Central Fire Station at Mounthooly in Aberdeen for coming to the rescue of a stuck OST instructor this afternoon.

“The embarrassment of being rescued was unreal.”

The picture has been shared almost 100 times online and attracted lots of comments.

A police spokeswoman said there was a “malfunction” with the set of handcuffs.

She said: “Officer safety training is a vital skill for police officers and involves training with handcuffs and other equipment.

“On this occasion there appears to have been a malfunction with a set of handcuffs which our colleagues at the fire service were fortunately able to assist with.

“This type of situation is thankfully rare but as has been demonstrated procedures are in place to deal with such an occurrence.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said bolt cutters were used to free the officer and no one was injured.
