A cancer charity has launched its biggest ever fundraising campaign to help attract some of the world’s top oncologists to the north-east.
As Friends of Anchor kicks off its 20th anniversary year, the charity has unveiled its Dream Big campaign, which aims to raise £1million to help bring a world-class research team to the region.
The cash will go towards Aberdeen University’s development trust, which is attempting to raise £4million to bring the oncologists to the area.
The new “high quality” academics will be brought in to work alongside current researchers.
Professor Steven Heys, head of the school of medicine and a breast cancer consultant surgeon, said: “This is a really important development where the university is working closer with Friends of Anchor and NHS Grampian so we can push our research and quality of care to the next level.
“The University of Aberdeen has internationally renowned expertise in many aspects of cancer research but this brings it all together.
“What’s important for patients here and now is that if you have research teams, if patients then take part in clinical trials then we know from all the studies out there that, for whatever reason, they have a better chance of being alive and well.”
Health bosses hope to implement the plan over the next five years.
Friends of Anchor is now appealing for the public to help it raise the cash.
Charity chairman, and Balmoral Group boss, Jim Milne, said: “In order to raise this huge amount for the project we’ll need support from right across the community – from fundraisers to corporates and significant philanthropic individuals.
“This is Friends of Anchor’s most ambitious fundraising drive yet and we’re looking forward to garnering the support of individuals and groups throughout the north-east to help make this dream for cancer research a reality.”
