He was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but died four days later.
Yesterday, Janis Karajevs appeared in court accused of murder.
The 30-year-old, of Aberdeen, made no plea and his case was fully committed.
He was remanded in custody.
Earlier this week the family of Mr Zarskus paid tribute to the him.
They said: “Aleksejus was a much loved twin brother and uncle to his family in Aberdeen and a cherished son and family member to his relatives in Lithuania.
“He was hard working and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
The flats where the incident took place are close to the BP petrol station, and King Street’s junction with Seaton Place.
Detective Inspector Gary Winter, from the police’s major investigation team, is leading the inquiry into Mr Zarskus’ death.
He has asked that anyone who has information, or who knew Mr Zarskus, to contact the police.
He said: “This was an isolated and contained incident and at no point was there any threat to any other members of the public.”
