Hackers took over Aberdeen City Council’s website on Saturday evening in an attack lasting at least two hours.
An anonymous hacking group, claiming to be called Team System DZ, left a single black page taking over the entire website with the silhouette of a man in a stetson hat and the message ‘security stupidity’.
The group posted about the attack on their own Facebook page – but gave no reasons for the hack.
Aberdeen City Council confirmed they were aware of the malicious hack – stating on their own Facebook page: “We are aware of a security issue which affected the homepage of our website this evening (28 January) and are working urgently to investigate the incident.
“The website is currently back online we would like to assure residents that no personal data is held on the Aberdeen City Council website.”
The attack first came to light around 7pm, but the site appeared to be fully functional by 10pm.
