The SNP group leader at Aberdeen City Council has demanded the local authority reveal how much the delayed repairs to one of the city’s most historic buildings will cost when it is finally complete.
Work on the Granite City’s A-listed Town House first commenced in August 2014, but the project has been hit by a series of delays and the costs have now spiralled to more than £4 million.
The original work was due to cost just £1.2 million, before rotting wood and other problems were discovered.
The renovation was due to be complete by September 30 last year, but that target was missed.
It is hoped that the repairs will be completed and the scaffolding removed from the roof and clock tower by March.
Stephen Flynn, the leader of the SNP group at the city council, has now written to the chief executive of Aberdeen City council to ask how much the final cost of the project will be.
Mr Flynn said: “The Labour, Conservative and Independent Councillors running this city need to be honest with the public and explain exactly how much this project is now going to cost.
“We’ve now seen delay after delay and I have no doubt that the public’s confidence in the administration to deliver any project, least of all this one, is now at an all-time low.
“I simply cannot comprehend why this project is being shrouded in secrecy and I would call on someone, anyone, within the administration to state what the final cost of the work will be.”
