Councillors have backed plans to scrap planning regulations in the north-east’s biggest town in a bid to attract millions of pounds of fresh investment.
Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure committee met yesterday to consider creating a simplified planning zone in the south of Peterhead.
The scheme was roundly welcomed by councillors who asked that local members consider the details of how the zone will be operated before it is given final approval.
James Welsh, manager of the Energetica body which brought the SPZ forward, said: “The idea is to support investment and remove the planning hurdle.”
Within such zones, firms have planning permission immediately – within certain guidelines – and can begin construction without going through the full planning process.
Committee chairman David Aitchison said: “I personally welcome this scheme. If it is a success, other areas could take if forward. It is a tool for economic development.”
Peterhead independent councillor Alan Gardiner added: “I’m delighted to do this. I give my full support for this exciting initiative. Inward investment is welcomed by business.”
A similar SPZ at Hillington Park in Glasgow has already attracted £20million of investment and is the site of a new “motorbike village” with Ducati and Harley Davidson showrooms.
