A young woman has been accused of assaulting youngsters at a north-east nursery.
Twenty-year-old India Mitchell was charged by police after an investigation was launched into the treatment of youngsters she was supervising.
Worried parents who believed their children had been mistreated contacted the authorities about their concerns.
And now a report has been sent to the Crown Office which alleges Miss Mitchell carried out “assaults” on children aged between two and five who attended the nursery.
Following the allegations, managers at the privately-run facility in Fraserburgh sent a letter to parents addressing “rumours” which had been “circulating”.
In the letter they said they were working with nursery regulatory bodies the Care Inspectorate and Scottish Social Services Council to ensure an investigation was carried out.
They also said no one had been suspended but that a member of staff would not be attending work.
The letter stated: “Parents whose children are part of the investigation are aware of the situation.
“We would like to thank our loyal and valued children and parents for their understanding.
“Please be assured your children are safe with the continued high quality of care.”
The police, Aberdeenshire Council and the Care Inspectorate confirmed they were investigating.
Last night the parents of one child who attended the nursery, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “We are saddened to hear about the reports at such a popular Fraserburgh nursery.
“We trust nurseries with our most precious little people so it is frightening to hear about these allegations.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 20-year-old woman has been charged in relation to assaults reported at a nursery in Fraserburgh.
“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
“We have been working closely with the Care Inspectorate, who are aware of the full circumstances.”
A spokesman for the Care Inspectorate said: “We are aware of an allegation in relation to this nursery and are working closely with partners including the police and Aberdeenshire Council to ensure that children are safe.
“We are in the process of inspecting this nursery and a report will be published in due course.
“Every child in Scotland has the right to safe, compassionate care which meets their needs and respects their rights.
“Anyone with a concern about a care service can contact our helpline on 0345 6009527.”
A spokeswoman for Aberdeenshire Council added: “We are aware of an incident that took place in Fraserburgh and are working closely with the provider to ensure all recommendations from the Care Inspectorate are met.”
Miss Mitchell was unavailable to comment last night.
