A multimillion-pound extension to an Aberdeen primary school has finally been opened after a series of delays.

The £5million expansion of Greenbrae School in the Bridge of Don was officially opened at a special ceremony yesterday by head teacher Anna Royal, education convener Angela Taylor and local councillor Willie Young.

Work on the extension – which means the school now has space for 330 pupils and an additional 80 nursery places – began over a year ago, last January.

It was due to be complete by August, but was delayed due to a number of factors – including the poor weather last summer.

The ground floor of the extension includes classrooms, a games hall, a medical room and dining facilities. A library and new toilets for both pupils and staff has also been created.

The first floor consists of classrooms as well as another medical room.

Miss Royle said: “All pupils, parents and staff are delighted to have reached the completion stage of our new school extension and refurbishment.

“We all appreciate wholeheartedly how fortunate we are to have these fabulous new facilities in which to carry out our learning and teaching from within.

“There is no doubt that our now cutting edge technology, new facilities and space will provide a platform for the children in which to enjoy rich learning experiences. We are all very excited and feel very privileged.”

Mr Young said: “It’s great that we can now see for ourselves the end result of our decision in 2015 to expand Greenbrae School.

“This is another major investment in our schools estate and our planning ahead ensures that we are able to cater for the increased school-age population in the Bridge of Don area resulting from housing developments in the area.

“Our children deserve the best educational facilities possible and the Greenbrae extension offers just that.”

But Liberal Democrat group leader Ian Yuill said there were “lessons to learn” from the delays.

He said: “I’m obviously very pleased that the extension has now been finished and the pupils and staff will benefit enormously from this.

“Clearly it is important that when these projects are delayed that the reasons are learned.”
