A Fraserburgh couple who married 70 years ago have been heralded as an inspiration for the younger generation on Valentine’s Day.
Georgina and Robert McDonald, both 90-years-old, are among the north-east’s longest-married pairs and have now been honoured by staff at their local supermarket.
As a Valentine’s treat, staff at the town’s Asda branch where the McDonalds do their shopping have presented the happy pair with a bouquet of flowers and selection of chocolates to enjoy today.
Mrs McDonald recalled meeting the love of her life at a local dance and – although he was not in the “Gene Kelly class” – he won her over before he joined up with the paratroopers. He later took on a sawmill business in the area.
She said: “We’ve had a very happy life together. Yes, we’ve had our ups and downs, but we have been really lucky both with health and happiness. Sometimes we both want to be the boss, but I think I’ve won.”
Mrs McDonald added that she thought the “secret” to their success had been finding a “balance” in their marriage.
Carolyn Taylor, the community champion at Asda in Fraserburgh, said: “We were so happy to welcome Robert and Georgina into the store to show our appreciation for their long and happy marriage.
“They are regular customers here, so it’s good to see that the pair still love each other as much as the day they first met.”
In addition to celebrating seven decades of marriage, Mrs McDonald was invited to The Queen’s birthday celebrations last year, because as she shares her birthday with the monarch.
