Aberdeen City Council is proposing replacing a roundabout with a set of traffic lights on a busy road in the city to increase pedestrian safety.
The authority plans to remove the roundabout where Forest Avenue crosses Cromwell Road and Union Grove in the Ashley Road area of the city and replace it with traffic lights.
The idea of removing the roundabout follows concerns from local residents, who have reported a number of incidents where the safety of pedestrians crossing at the roundabout has been endangered.
On Cromwell Road, there is a zebra crossing where pedestrians can traverse the road, and while it meets regulations for being far enough away from the roundabout, pedestrians have still been at risk with speeding cars often struggling to stop before the crossing.
There have been multiple occasions where vehicles have come close to running over people on the crossing.
On the other side of the roundabout, children walking, to and from Ashley Road School, have to negotiate Union Grove and that has also created safety fears.
A school crossing patroller is at the site in the morning and afternoon to assist children crossing the road.
However, local residents have also reported cases where cars have started moving before the crossing patroller and the children have stepped off the carriageway.
Martin Greig, councillor for Hazlehead, Ashley and Queens Cross, believes it is important action is implemented to prevent anybody from getting injured.
He said: “There has been a strong wish from the community to improve the crossing in the area. It is only a matter a time before something serious happens.
“I am very keen the best solution is found to protect potential victims.
“There are so many instances of drivers not noticing the Cromwell Road crossing, so it is time that something is done before there is a serious accident.”
Duane Mead, director of the Rendezvous Gallery, which sits between Forest Avenue and Union Grove and overlooks the roundabout, thinks it is purely good fortune nobody has been injured on the roads near the roundabout.
He said: “Over the years, I have seen lots of near accidents.
“I believe there will be a serious accident if something is not done about it.
“It’s very lucky that no-one has been hurt crossing the road as yet.”
