Startling new figures have been released, indicating sex crimes are on the rise in the Buchan area.
Police officers are preparing to brief Peterhead councillors on the figures tomorrow, during a meeting of the local authority’s Buchan area committee.
And in their report, it will be revealed that sexual crimes – including rape and indecent assault – have increased since 2015.
Their report, which details incidents between April and December 2016, states that 76 sexual crimes took place. Only 59 occurred during the same period in 2015 – an increase of about 29%.
The figures will be announced just days after a man appeared in Peterhead Sheriff Court charged with assault to intent to rape a woman in Tannery Street, Banff, earlier this month.
Last night, Chief Detective Inspector Colin Morrans said it was important that victims of sexual crimes know that their reports will be “fully” investigated.
“There are several factors to take into account when analysing an increase in crimes of a sexual nature, with the most notable being the increase in public confidence nationally to report such matters both past and present,” he added.
“I am encouraged this continues to be the case in the north-east and will always encourage victims to come forward. This is an outcome local police, along with partners, continue to work hard to achieve.
“The detection figures contained within this report are very strong, highlighting the effectiveness and commitment of policing teams who work tirelessly to ensure every evidential detail is considered and explored as well as supporting victims through established local partnerships.
“If anyone has been the victim of a sexual offence, whether recent or otherwise, I would encourage them to call Police Scotland on 101 and report it. We have specially trained officers in place who can provide assistance and support.”
Detection rates for sexual crimes in the Buchan area also increased during the same period in the report.
About 140% more incidents were reported to the police by members of the public.
