Aberdeen City Council has laid the foundations for the construction of 2000 new council houses in the city.
The project, which has been set a potential completion date of 2022, would represent one of the biggest council building initiatives in a generation.
More than 7,000 people are on the waiting list for council houses in Aberdeen, with many blaming the Right to Buy scheme for the lack of affordable properties.
The council hopes the cost to build the homes will be around £105,000 per unit, and additional land is expected to be purchased to make room for future housing.
A report to councillors read: “The provision of a new supply of council houses for rent where there is an identified need is also a desirable outcome.
“We will provide quality services to our council tenants to enable them to have a dry, warm home in a safe and enjoyable environment.”
