Exclusive new images of how a £10million dolphin watching centre in Aberdeen could look have been released.
The proposed centre at Greyhope Bay, near Torry, will feature a wildlife viewing platform and a variety of amenities to encourage science and education through performance and art, with conference rooms, a restaurant and theatre space.
The project is being lead by marine scientist Fiona McIntyre, who wants to establish a new tourist and eco-friendly facility and build on the success of initiatives as Dolphinwatch.
She has already laid out her vision to the city council, business support agencies, local and national environmental organisations, including the RSPB and Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
And these images, created by architect Professor Gokay Deveci, based at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture at RGU, will form part of a launch event on May 12 in Aberdeen.
This will feature an immersive 3D tour, entertainment from Scottish hit band Hue and Cry, and it will be hosted by Dougie Vipond.
Ms McIntyre said: “I developed Greyhope Bay as a project in a bid to provide a facility which would spark interest and inspire others to connect with and value Aberdeen’s marine setting, its natural heritage and culture.
“Our plans have gained traction and support, with significant finance raised, architectural designs drawn up, business case validation, and Greyhope Bay is at a really important stage.
“If 2016 was our ‘Test the Dream Year’, then 2017 is our ‘It is Happening Year’. This is a very exciting time and it is good to see so many people in Aberdeen get behind it.”
The proposals have gained high-profile backing from such companies as oil giants, Nexen and the Big Partnership.
Ray Riddoch, managing director of Nexen Petroleum UK, said previously: “The Greyhope Bay project is an exciting initiative for the city that will do much to educate and engage the local community with the marine wildlife on our doorstep.
“The centre will help cement Aberdeen’s status as a centre of excellence for marine sciences and enhance its reputation as an international tourist destination.
“Nexen is delighted to support this community initiative as the care and conservation of the environment, supporting the local people and economy of Aberdeen is at the heart of our corporate giving strategy.”
