Two popular north-east tourist attractions have announced plans to host a joint event at one of the region’s most famous locations.
This summer, the team at Peterhead Prison Museum will be joined by colleagues from Grampian Transport Museum for a vintage vehicle event on the jail’s exercise yard.
The two visitor centres draw tourists to the region from across the globe and bosses at the prison museum have heralded the move as the start of a partnership between the attractions.
Conrad Ritchie, managing director of Score Europe and a spokesman for the Peterhead Prison Museum, said: “We’re happy to be working with Grampian Transport Museum on what will be a first for Peterhead, and the event will bring Peterhead’s Scottish Week to a positive close.”
Museum team member Alex Geddes added: “From the museum side we’re delighted to be working with Grampian Transport Museum on what is hoped to be the first of many events.”
Last year the former HMP Peterhead jail was relaunched as a visitor centre and museum with audio tours charting the history of Scotland’s most famous penitentiary.
More than 50,000 people visited the museum in the first six months after it opened, and in November the site was handed a prestigious four-star rating by tourism body Visit Scotland.
Displays let tourists explore the jail’s history, which stretched from 1888 until 2013 when it was replaced by the neighbouring HMP Grampian.
Among the services available are audio tours narrated by some of the former prison officers who worked at the jail, including Jackie Stewart who was held hostage during a riot at the prison in 1987.
