Public to choose what towns get share of £100,000

A north-east town will be given a say on where £100,000 of funding is spent.

The Your Voice Your Choice scheme returns this year with the help of local fisherman John Buchan, of Trawlermen fame, who will launch the initiative tomorrow.

The programme had been piloted last year in Fraserburgh and Peterhead, when locals were given the opportunity to vote for local groups that deserved a share of a £100,000 funding pot.

The groups each had to come forward with one project that would improve health, wellbeing and the community.

This year’s voting will follow the same structure and culminate with a day at the polls on June 24.

Mr Buchan will be on hand to detail the scheme at an event tomorrow at the port’s Apex Hall from 4pm.

He will be accompanied by groups who won funding last year.

They included Theatre Modo, Cornerstone, Shape Up Peterhead, Buchanhaven Boat Shed and Clan Cancer Support.

Theatre Modo, run by local man Martin Danziger, used cash from last year’s event to run ‘Oot and Aboot’ workshops.

His was one of 12 groups to receive funding.

He said: “Oot and Aboot takes circus to the street, parks, public spaces and anywhere that young people are. [It’s designed] to engage them, to give them something positive, healthy and safe to do, to encourage them to commit, to gain accreditation, and ultimately to give something back.”

Throughout the scheme, projects vying for a share of the cash will have opportunities locally to promote what they have already achieved and the difference the funding would make to their efforts going forward.

Anyone interested in applying for funding is asked to attend tomorrow’s event to get advice from the groups and the event’s steering group.

Groups will also be able to pick up an application form at the event to take part.
