Staff at a north-east supermarket have raised more than £1,500 for a cancer charity after cycling for 400 miles – on an exercise bike.
Colleagues at the Morrisons store in Peterhead launched the fundraising initiative for children and young people’s cancer support organisation Clic Sargent.
Employees across the country chose the cause as the retail firm’s new charity partner earlier this year with the aim of raising £8million over the next three years to help stop cancer destroying young lives.
And the Peterhead store team, alongside friends and families and volunteers from The Princes Trust, pedalled a total of 412 miles and raised £1,591 in donations from customers.
Sheena Irvine, the shop’s community champion, said: “We’re so proud to have raised so much money already for our new charity partner Clic Sargent and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who cycled and donated.
“Our customers, as always, were incredibly generous.”
She added that the money raised could make a “positive difference” to the lives of young people who are facing the disease.
The team initially set a target of riding 180 miles on their static bikes, which is the distance a child from the town would have to travel for specialist cancer treatment in Glasgow.
In the event, they smashed their target, more than doubling that distance.
Clic Sargent fundraising manager, Fern McDonald added: “Our social workers, nurses and other frontline staff across the UK work tirelessly to limit the damage cancer causes beyond a child or young person’s health.
“Thanks to Morrisons and the efforts of the wonderful team at Peterhead, we’ll be able to stop cancer destroying more lives than ever.”
