A smoke-damaged Aberdeen restaurant has donated £2000 worth of food to a local homeless charity.
The Mexican eatery, Muchacho, was forced to close after a fire at the neighbouring Rose Street Shoe Repair caused significant damage on Saturday.
With the premises due to be closed for at least a week, staff realised most of the food would have to be thrown away.
Elena Aspe, co-owner of the restaurant said: “We were determined the food wasn’t going to go to waste.
“When it was confirmed we needed to be closed for about a week, we were adamant we wanted to give the food to a deserving cause.”
Her first call was to the local homeless charity, Aberdeen Cyrenians, who gratefully accepted the donation.
The organisation intends to use the donation for their Street Alternatives service, which provides meals for rough sleepers across the city.
The restaurant handed over all of their fresh produce, including ten kilograms of tomatoes and five kilograms of avocadoes as well as peppers and a range of salsas.
Sarah Igesund, Cyrenians volunteer co-ordinator said: “We are extremely grateful for the kindness and generosity shown by Muchacho, especially at what must be such a tough and stressful time for themselves.
“Our volunteer cooks are hard at work, preparing vegetarian lasagne for the Street Alternatives service.
“We’ll add some nachos too, so our service users can enjoy the mango salsa and range of chilli dips and sauces.”
